The YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka wrapped up Peace Week by awarding its annual peace medals to two organizations.
The volunteers of The Sharing Place food bank of Orillia were awarded a peace medal Friday at the Orillia YMCA.
“It’s very humbling to have been selected for something as prestigious as this and it’s a wonderful way of acknowledging the work of our volunteers,” said Christine Hager, executive director of The Sharing Place food bank in Orillia, who accepted the award.

Ashiko stretched over 2 days this year! Day 1 featured youth events at the Orillia Farmers Market and Market Square. Local artists and musicians shared their talent and passion to raise funds for The Sharing Place. Restaurant venues (Apple Annie’s, Brewery Bay, Bistro 179 and The Brownstone Café) pumped up the excitement with diverse music and food later in the day. On Saturday Sept 7, Day 1 of 2013 Ashiko World Music Festival, youth from Orillia painted and sketched, in sync with music, to create vibrant art pieces showcasing their talent. The fusion of music and art is a dramatic means of self expression.
